Should a visit to the dentist be horrible? Of course, this should not be an unpleasant experience for our child.
It is no secret that even many adults avoid the dentist like the devil of holy water, which, unfortunately, has a negative effect on their teeth. Remember that permanent teeth will not grow back after falling out, and a beautiful and healthy smile is very important.
How to convince a child that she is afraid of the dentist?
Many parents make the mistake of postponing a visit to the dentist until necessary. When a child has dental problems and needs treatment, unpleasant memories are likely to last a long time. To avoid this, you should come with the child for an adaptation visit, when there are no problems with teeth. Two to three years is a favorable period. During such a trip to the office, the child can safely look at it, learn a lot of interesting information, get used to the place and even get a gift.
It is also recommended to choose a dentist’s office that is adapted to the needs of the youngest patients, ie equipped with colorful chairs with animals and a play area. Then the child will be willing to visit the dentist in the future. It is also a good idea to play with the child at the dentists at home, where the patient may be a stuffed animal. Thanks to this, the child will see how the visit to the dental office will go.
Our approach is also important. The child absorbs everything like a sponge and closely monitors our emotions and behavior. Therefore, it should be shown that there is nothing to be afraid of, but it is not recommended to talk about pain or fear, because the youngest ones pay attention first of all to individual words. In the case of children who are afraid of the procedure, you should ask the dentist to use inhalation sedation, ie a fun gas that has a calming and relaxing effect. It is also important to remember that modern dental offices do not lack safe types of anesthesia, which should be used if the child is paralyzed by the prospect of pain. This will reduce the suffering of the baby.
Curb your fear of the dentist
If the child is against dentists, you should bring distractions in the form of a favorite mascot, doll, or color book. Our presence alone will help him a lot, so you should hold the child’s hand and distract him by talking to her. At the same time, we must remain calm, which will also affect the baby.
Even if we see that he is uncomfortable, let’s move on. It is also advisable to reward the child after visiting the dentist. You can buy him a small gift and spend time together as they like. This will make you positively associate a visit to the dentist’s office. Don’t forget to visit the dentist regularly with your child, ie every four months.
