Hackers managed to break the new technology of the US Department of Defense. And it just happened during the DEF CON 2022 conference in Las Vegas.
It is worth noting that this system was supposed to provide army bases with electricity, thanks to which the Pentagon planned to deploy autonomous electrical networks on its bases.
Before implementing the technology, the Ministry of Defense decided to test its strength by using hackers. 1700 people tried to do it. Many of them managed to hack the latest technology. For example, a hacker from Colorado, Benny, managed to cause a system crash in a matter of minutes. For this, he used a creative method.
“If we lose public infrastructure, we lose stability, so I think it’s a really good idea to make hackers think about how to break the system, how to manipulate the data, and what will happen to it during the manipulation,” says the specialist.
The Pentagon’s deputy director for digital technologies and artificial intelligence, Kathy Olson, says the new networks are connected to multiple databases. A large volume of information can overload microgrids. Hackers can use this loophole. Now the Pentagon is working on improving the system.
